My Puerto Calero secret
Not so much a Puerto Calero secret, but a bit of advice that is true for the entire island: Try the Canarian cuisine. There’s lots of fresh fish and seafood – baby squid and fresh aioli were particularly delicious, but the true stars are Canarian potatoes (called papas arrugadas, they get all wrinkly because they are cooked in salt water), grilled Canarian cheese and mojo. Mojo is best described as Canarian salsa, based on peppers, chillies or coriander. Many restaurants have their own recipe for their trademark mojo. The grilled cheese with mojo makes for a great starter and Canarian potatoes are served with traditional Canarian food. It’s easy to go for the type of cuisine we’re used to eating at home, and all the favourites are available in Puerto Calero. Papas arrugadas with mojo are absolutely delicious, though, and you should at least try them once.
