Prices and costs

As the Canary Islands are not part of the EU tax union, everything you buy in Puerto Calero is taxed much lower than on mainland Spain. Then again, Puerto Calero is a luxury holiday destination and the marina is supposed to attract wealthy yacht owners, so it’s not the best place for a bargain, either. We were told that the prices in shops and restaurants in the marina went down with the onset of the global recession in 2008. While I wouldn’t describe Puerto Calero as a cheap destination, it’s far from being expensive.

Prices at restaurants and bars

You pay around 3.50 euros for a beer and the same for a glass of house wine in the restaurants. A bottle of wine starts at around 10 euros. It’s easy to find meal deals for 10 to 12 euros for three courses in Puerto Calero. If you don’t make use of one of these deals, you’ll still rarely spend more than 15 to 20 euros even if you order one of the more expensive dishes on the menu.

Supermarket prices

There is a supermarket at the marina which stocks Spanish as well as European food (we spotted Dutch, English, French and German packaging on the shelves), soft drinks, beer and wine. It is fairly big and you’ll have no trouble stocking up on all the basics. We were surprised to find that the prices for food were noticeably lower than in the UK. Our expectation was that it would be rather pricey because the marina is such an exclusive setting. It was, however, possible to buy food and soft drinks for two for less than 8 euros. One reason for the low prices is that there is only 5 percent VAT on food stuffs in Lanzarote. Beer starts at 50 cents per can, wine is available from 4 euros.
