The good: 5 things I love about Puerto Calero

Wine bar Casablanca: The bar is located at the east end of the old marina building. It offers a wide range of wines – both European and Canarian – as well as a selection of beers and cocktails. On the terrace, there are big white sofas. We frequently came here for an after-sailing drink before dinner. Service was always good and attentive. Whenever we stayed for more than one drink, the staff made sure we never ran out of olives and peanuts.

The choice of restaurants: We spent one week in Puerto Calero and were far from running out of options. We didn’t even get to try all the restaurants. I have to mention that we went to the Tex-Mex place again on our last night because we enjoyed our first time there so much. The guacamole that came with the tortilla chips was fresh and delicious, and our fajitas were spot-on both times. If you enjoy Mexican food, you’ll not be disappointed there.

24-hour security: With the security guards on patrol 24 hours a day, there were never any questions about personal safety or the security of the marina. You’ll sleep soundly in the knowledge that it is in the interest of the marina to provide an environment where people are safe from pickpockets, burglars and other criminals.

Feeding the fish: The marina has a large grey mullet population. Feeding them is rather fun and an ideal activity if you have a few moments to kill. We bought a small bread roll a couple of times and fed the fish. After a minute or two, we were hardly able to see the water because it was teeming with mullet.

Dolphins: Whether you go on a catamaran cruise, charter a yacht or go windsurfing, watch out for dolphins! They make frequent appearances, swimming alongside the boats.
